Engineering Newcomer 2017 goes international

Even students outside of Germany and Austria discover the design competition for themselves

Engineering Newcomer Challenge 2017

The popularity of Engineering Newcomer is unwavering: Once again, the design competition enjoyed an increase in the participation of students and pupils. 31 teams and lone fighters as well as school classes signed up this year till the end of July to submit their projects for the design competition.

"Every single idea of the junior engineers is very exciting and shows the wide range of participant abilities," says Tobias Denkel of CADENAS, member of the jury.

CADENAS has organized the competition already for the fourth year, together with norelem Normelemente KG, the Bundesarbeitskreis Fachschule für Technik and Solidpro. Pupils and students, as well as the related education facilities, are not only attracted by the cash prize, which the winner can enjoy in the same amount for school and university alike. An award as well will increase career chances and create considerable attention for one's own engineering project and will arouse interest.

Due to the high demand, this year's competition is open to pupils and students outside of Germany and Austria as well. Four participants from Serbia, Croatia, India and Brasil have therefore registered for the Engineering Newcomer.

"It's great that we were able to also attract participants of other nationalities with the Engineering Newcomer," affirmed Jürgen Heimbach, CEO of CADENAS. "There is a lot of potential and knowledge worldwide in the area of engineering that is just waiting to be discovered. For this reason, in future we will promote the Engineering Newcomer competition all the more internationally.

Specialized skills and social media

Besides the known evaluation criteria such as "innovation / creativity", "practical value / technological benefit / market chances", use of standards / purchased parts / cost consideration / variability", "function / handling", technological implementation" and "representation", there are additional points under the title of "social media marketing" when the resp. CAD model is uploaded to CADENAS exchange platform PARTcloud.net. Half of the participants have already posted their project under the designation „Engineering Newcomer 2017“.

"Marketing your own project via social media channels is something quite common today – it's therefore important that the participants also demonstrate here what they are capable of. The uploaded models can even be integrated into one's own website, for example via iFrames," says Jürgen Heimbach. In addition, a 3D CAD model is considerably easier to view than a photo or screenshot.

Always up to date in the Engineering Newcomer group

The winners will be announced at the Motek trade fair.

The jury – consisting of Tobias Denkel of CADENAS, August Kurz of Solidpro, Matthias Grywatsch from the Bundesarbeitskreis Fachschule für Technik and Timo Reile of norelem – have their hands full till the middle of September inspecting the projects, making their evaluations and choosing, first five, and then their three favorites. The winners will be announced at the Motek trade fair in Stuttgart, Germany in October.

Participants and those interested can log in to 3D CAD models download portal PARTcommunity in the Engineering Newcomer Group and keep up to date on the favorites, the winners and new challenges.

One thing is already sure: The award ceremony will take place at the norelem booth 5525 in hall 5 at 11 a.m. on 11 October 2017. All participants as well as teachers, lecturers and interested parties are cordially invited to join the award ceremony.
