7.9.3.14.6.  Ellipses and Ellipse segments

"Ellipses" toolbar

"Ellipses" toolbar

[Note]Note

Only available in Drawing mode.

[Note]Note

As of V12 Ellipses and Ellipse segments can not only be used for drawings but also for sketches.

Restrictions:

  • When exporting, ellipses and ellipse segments are concatenated from several circular arcs as approximation.

  • Sketches with ellipse and ellipse segments do not support extrudes with Draft (although extrudes are not an official feature in V12 and so are only available in the drawing mode).

  • Ellipses and ellipse segments are not supported by the tool Contour offset (although "Contour offset" is no official feature in V12).

  • Ellipse by point on main axis and hull edge point

Click on the icon and follow the instructions displayed in the status line:

    1. Choose center point: Once the ellipse is created, under Edit element, the point's coordinates are displayed under Center point X / Center point Y.

    2. Select point on main axis: Once the ellipse is created, under Edit element, the point's coordinates are displayed under Main axis point X / Main axis point Y.

The ellipse's orientation results from center point and main axis point.

  • Ellipse segment by point on main axis, width, height, start- and end angle

Click on the icon and follow the instructions displayed in the status line:

    1. Choose center point: In the dialog, the chosen point is displayed under Center point X / Center point Y.

    2. Select point on main axis: In the dialog, the chosen point is displayed under Main axis point X / Main axis point Y.

The ellipse's orientation results from center point and main axis point.

    4. Choose start point:

    5. Select end point:

Start angle and End angle are in relation to the main axis. The angular orientation is counterclockwise as usual.

In the docking window Edit element you can subsequently adjust the values or variables of the single parameters.

    [Note]Note

For ellipse segments not touching their min. and max. extension (values of major and minor axis) the real values in the sketch concerning Width / Height and Start angle / End angle are not correct due to the internal method of calculation.

    Internal calculation:

    1. A circular arc is created with the entered Start angle and End angle.

    2. Now the circular arc is compressed/stretched in order to bring it in the form of an ellipse.

In doing so also start angle and end angle are compressed.

So the angle originally stated is not the one shown in the sketch. Also width and hight of the ellipse segment are divergent. See Fig. „Ellipse segment: divergent values in the sketch“. (The lines pointing out the angles with 45 degree are only for clarification.)
