With V12.11 there is a new variable editor, which should always be used by default.

For old media variables with existing content, the new variable editor is also opened, but a message is displayed.

"Your source code contains unreadable (possibly complex) HTML! The HTML will be changed when you switch to the old editor. Would you still like to switch to the old editor?"

If you want to do this, confirm this by activating the Use old HTML editor option and clicking OK.

-> The old editor is opened.

If you deactivate the Use old HTML editor option, the following message appears:

"Switching to the new editor changes the HTML as it contains some tags that are not supported by the editor. These tags will be removed when you close the editor. Would you still like to switch to the new editor?"
