The function Sort variables is related to the sorting in the characteristic attribute table (not to the one in Variable Manager). When creating a new variable it will automatically be queued at the last position.

When clicking on the button, the dialog box Sort table variables is opened. Using the buttons Move up and Move down, you can set the position as desired.
